BIXBY’S WINTER WONDERLAND

Bixby is having a fantastic celebration of CHRISTmas this year starting Dec. 7th. There will be activities in the downtown area on Dec. 7th, 8th & 9th… Then there will be a short break and continued Dec. 21st, 22nd & 23rd.

This celebration will be a fun and beneficial activity for our Spartan Golfers to be a part of.  All proceeds will go to local clubs and non-profit organizations, including the Bixby Outreach center. School groups volunteering to work the program will also receive proceeds but any money donated back to the golf program will be dedicated to the Outreach Center.

We need player and parent participation and I PROMISE all those that work to make this a success for our community will enjoy the experience AND benefit from the experience as well!

I have signed us up, as a group, to help insure that this is a big success for our community. SO PLEASE DONATE YOUR TIME.  We will have a Rib Crib sponsored dinner and CHRISTmas party for our golfers and family members who represent our team!!!

HERE IS WHAT I PROPOSE:

#1 NEED:  2 Dads or perhaps a father & son team to set up sound equipment at 4:00 and take it back down at 9:00 – takes about an hour to set it up and take it down. No obligations in between. (2 workers total)

#2 NEED:  6 WORKERS (Combination of moms/dads and golfers) from 4:00 to 10:00 to sell SANTAS SWEETS – Cookies, etc at an assigned booth area. The 6 hours can be shared by 2 teams of 6 workers if so desired…

#3 NEED: 6 WORKERS  (Combination of  moms/dads and golfers) from 4:00 to 10:00 to selling crafts at a booth titled “MRS. SANTA CLAUS’ CRAFTS”. The 6 hour shift can be shared by 2 teams of 6 workers if so desired.

#4 NEED: 4 to 8 WORKERS (Combination of moms/dads and golfers) from 4:00 to 7:00 selling Hot choc. & Coffee.

AN IDEAL SITUATION, FROM MY THINKING, IS THAT ONE OR TWO MOMS OR DAD AGREE TO BE THE “SUPERVISOR” OF NEED STATIONS #2, #3 & #4.  By doing so, we can assign the players and parents to that supervisor and rotate the shifts as needed. AND HOPEFULLY THAT SUPERVISOR WILL MANAGE THAT ACTIVITY FOR THE 6 DAYS OF THE EVENT.

THE EVENT DATES AGAIN ARE DEC. 7TH, 8TH & 9TH….AND AGAIN 21st, 22nd & 23rd.  We have over 75 golfers and add in another 100 or so active parents or grand parents in kid’s lives, we should easily be able to assist to make this awesome program a success for years to come!

I plan to be in charge of quality control myself, making sure the Hot choc. and Santas Sweets are acceptable and a quality product!

Thanks for getting involved:  Please email or text me if you can “Supervise/organize” one of the 3 Stations. Together we can get plenty of workers from our ranks for you to schedule.  The Bixby Winter Wonderland’s website allows for sign-ups for volunteer and I have already signed us up! I note that I only signed up for the first night at this point, but once I hear from many of you, I plan to sign us up for the other days.  918-527-7169     kmorrow@bixbyps.org

Idea:  Junior High GIRLS team &  High Schools GIRLS team take activities #2  &  #3                      BOYS HIGH SCHOOL TEAM TAKE #4  –  JUNIOR HIGH BOYS WILL FILL IN AS NEEDED

This CHRISTmas……… Let’s do our share make it wonderful for Bixby…..

p.s., I am thinking about getting us tee-shirts made for our group to wear over our hoodies and coats!  Something along the line of

“Spartan Golfers love CHRISTmas”  (And a picture of Santa hitting a golf ball!)

TENTATIVE SEASON SCHEDULES

The attached player schedules are considered “tentative”.  Some player’s events  may be exchanged during the season based on rankings, performance, eligibility or disciplinary needs.

Most player’s schedules will not have changes and parents can, for the most part,  plan for the dates shown.  Regional & state teams will be determined by season progress.  It is possible there will be late season ranking matches to determine the strongest team for Regionals, which qualifies our teams for the State Tournament.

ALL ATHLETES MUST PARTICIPATE AS ASSIGNED. OFF-SEASON PERIOD: NOV. 27th THRU FEB1st

YOU MUST PLAN FOR YOUR ACTIVITY AND WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING. (INCLUDES WINTER GEAR AS NEEDED)

YOU MAY NOT WORK-OUT IN STREET CLOTHING OR STREET SHOES. (ON THE INDOOR TURF OR THE YOGA STUDIO. YOU MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN TEAM RUNS WITHOUT PROPER SHOES.

FAILING TO PREPARE FOR AND PARTICIPATE IN YOUR ACTIVITY WILL EFFECT YOUR RANKING STATUS. YOU CAN BE PENALIZED MATCHES IN THE SPRING AND/OR HAVE TO MAKE UP THE MISSED WORKOUTS. WE PAY FOR THE MARTIAL ARTS AND YOGA INSTRUCTOR’S TIME: USE IT!

WEATHER PERMITTING, WE MAY BREAK FROM THE WORKOUT ROUTINE AT TIMES. BE PREPARED TO GO TO A COURSE, IN SMALL PRE-ASSIGNED GROUPS. KEEP YOUR CLUBS AND GOLF ATTIRE AVAILABLE. (In a complex locker or in your car)  I WILL WATCH FOR FAVORABLE WEATHER PATTERNS AND ADVISE THOSE PLAYERS WHO ARE PLAYING AS EARLY IN THE DAY AS POSSIBLE.

PRIVATE LESSONS WILL USUALLY TAKE PRIORITY OVER WORK-OUT SCHEDULES. (Either at your home course or the Complex)  Set up lessons as compatible with your off-season schedule as possible. (IN OTHER WORDS, DON’T INTENTIONALLY SKIP WORK-OUTS OR TEAM RUNS!)

Some golfers may “test out” of team runs. Some golfers may be prevented from certain activities based on medical issues.

MANDATORY SATURDAY MORNING PRACTICES WILL START DEC 2nd.  WATCH FOR THAT SCHEDULE.

HIGH SCHOOL & JUNIOR HIGH can be a very competitive teams this spring. (BOYS & GIRLS)  LET’S MAKE SURE NOBODY OUTWORKS US THIS WINTER!

PRACTICE INFORMATION

We do practice in cold weather, within limits. Our targeted temperature is 50 degrees, but wind can effect that temperature, of course.  Decisions to change plans are made between 1:00 & 2:00 so check your messages or website postings.

YOU MUST BE PREPARED FOR THE TEMPERATURE HOWEVER, OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE.  (You should have cold weather gear in your car and/or golf bag)

  1. Wear your hoodies up or a stocking cap
  2. Have a wind jacket AND wind pants or sweat pants. (NOT ONLY YOGA PANTS)
  3. Get winter gloves

Remember, When we start tournament play in March, the weather will be cold & windy…… (SOMETIMES RAIN OR LIGHT SNOW)

Again, be responsible and prepared. If you don’t properly plan to play or practice in the conditions that exist,  you should not try to play. You will be dropped from your assigned matches. All play before Dec. 1st is voluntary BUT after Dec. 1st, practices are mandatory.

SPARTAN GOLF FUND RAISER A BIG SUCCESS!

Parents and players stepped up once again this year, insuring that the 70+ Spartan golfers have a full spring season of competition. And once again we will also dress well, eat well and PLAY WELL!

We raised about $30,000 once again this year. While we do have a few bills to pay from that amount, we should easily be able to pay for a good number of JV matches, ‘B’ & ‘C’ Team Junior High matches. Everyone will have nice tournament uniforms as in past years. We expect to have plenty of money feed our players after tournaments again. (Look out Ci-Cis, Arbys, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc.)

There were so many parents involved this year, I am still accumulating names, looking at pictures and sending notes of thanks. It may take me awhile to get to everyone BUT PLEASE KNOW I realize what all of you did to make this a big success for our Spartans. I WILL BE MAKING SURE YOU PERSONALLY KNOW HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE YOU ALL SOMEHOW!

FOR NOW, I DO WANT TO ESPECIALLY THANK CHRIS AND CHRISTY JOHNSON FOR PUTTING IN SO MANY HOURS ORGANIZING, CALLING, PLANNING AND OVERALL DEDICATION SO MANY HOURS FOR MONTHS TO THIS EVENT. (Not mention their significant financial contribution again this year)

Remember, one of the biggest deals we have is that your Spartans can play for free at WhiteHawk 7 days a week. They can play for free at The Links, Monday thru Friday and for $5 on weekends. At Lit’l Links, they can play for free 7 days a week this semester as well. PLEASE ENCOURAGE THEM DO TO SO. Until we can have official practices starting Dec. 1st, playing on their own or with teammates or family members is their best chance to improve before we start tournaments in the spring.

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL….. You continue to amaze me with your support for Spartan Athletes!

BOYS FALL RANKING SCHEDULE

We will complete Fall Ranking on the below listed dates & sites. The intent is to identify the top 10 VARSITY players for our early season matches. Then, as the season progresses, there will likely be ranking changes based on tournament results and/or players joining the program for the 2nd semester. IF YOU ARE ASSIGNED TO THE FALL RANKING DATES BUT DO NOT PLAY, THAT CAN EFFECT YOUR STATUS AS A TOP 10 PLAYER. PLAN FOR THESE DATES. (Transportation plans under consideration)

Seniors do not play JV matches but MAY be allowed to do so for the first 3 tournaments if a reasonable opportunity exists for them to break into the top 5 as a result of their performance in those 3 events. (Based on stroke averages)

RANKING SCHEDULE: (Number of holes based on daylight)

Wednesday Oct. 4th – Whitehawk G.C. – 12 to 15 holes
Friday Oct. 6th – Golf Club of Okla. – 12 to 15 holes
Wednesday Oct. 11th- The Links Golf – 9 holes
Friday Oct. 13th- MeadowBrook C.C. – 12 to 15 holes

TBA – A Final 18 hole ranking date at Indian Springs C.C. (A weekend or on a break)

RANKING IS BASED ON STROKE AVERAGES PER NUMBER OF HOLES PLAYED. As we cannot play 18 holes often, averages are calculated on ‘PER HOLE” averages. ONCE THE SEASON STARTS, ONLY 18 HOLE EVENTS ARE COUNTED UNDER MOST CIRCUMSTANCES.

JV Players will be assigned Ranking Matches as well on a different schedule. Those players will also be identified as to which JV group they will play in AND AGAIN, EVERYONE HAS A CHANCE TO BREAK INTO THE TOP 5 OR 10 PLAYERS BASED ON SCORES AND PERFORMANCE IN TOURNAMENTS.

To replace a player ranked above you, it is imperative that you have a chance to play that player in head to head matches and/or play in common tournaments on dates and under similar conditions.

KEEP IN MIND: Players determine rankings from their performance & averages. The coach DOES NOT, under most circumstances, randomly select players to play in varsity matches. Eligibility issues, disciplinary concerns or a player not making a good effort to improve and/or be ready to compete are situations the coach may replace a players in the line-up. Disqualifications or rules concerns can result in a player being removed from the line-up. Missing a bus departure time or violations of team rules or course etiquette are also reasons a player can be dropped from a line-up.

This is not intended to outline all team rules or policies, but rather give you an idea as to how you will make the tournament line-ups this spring. We will discuss the process more in team meetings very soon. Just know that we all want the best players representing our school in tournaments and everyone has an equal chance to be one of those top 5 players.

FUND RAISING INFORMATION:

The posting below has the sign-up forms for a scramble team and a form for a hole sponsor. WE NEED TO GET GOING ON SIGNING UP TEAMS AS WE ARE JUST ABOUT 5 weeks away from our tournament date.

The success of our season hinges on this one and only fund raiser we do. JUNIOR HIGH PLAYERS ALL GOT FORMS TO TAKE HOME FRIDAY

THE FUNDS ARE SPENT AS FOLLOWS: (including but not limited to)

> High School and Junior High uniform items.
> Meals provided for players at tournaments
> Sport drinks/water & snacks during tournament play
> JV PLAYER TOURNAMENTS & ‘B & C’ TEAM LEVEL PLAYERS FOR JUNIOR HIGH
> Practice Facility needs.
> Clinic Fees & instructor fees for all players
> GOLF COURSE PRACTICE GREEN FEES & RANGE BALLS (an absolute must!)

Each year, we have had a successful fund raising tournament allowing all 70+ players to play in spring tournaments, regardless of their team ranking or experience level. If we do not have sufficient funds to allow lower level players to play, we can only involve out TOP PLAYERS to play as the entry fees are high. (We spend about $9000 a year for tournament fees)

Feeding the players at and after tournaments is something we like to do. A successful fund raiser allows us to do that. Otherwise, players will need to bring $8 to $10 per event to eat after tournaments. That can cost a parent from $40 to $50
per season for JH players and up to $150 for a high school player.

Uniforms: We purchase SPIRIT GEAR & UNIFORMS (Tee shirts, Hoodies & Spartan caps, as well as monogrammed golf towels. We purchase tournament uniforms and wind or rain jackets. This expense runs as high as $200 per high school player (12 tournaments) and $100 to $125 for junior high players (4 tournaments max)

COACHING STIPENDS: We do receive stipends from the district but since we try to avoid “cuts” and keep more kids involved than any school, we need to pay additional stipends for coaches and clinic fees.

PRACTICE FEES: We must pay courses for practice space. This is perhaps the only sport you cannot solely practice on campus. We must pay from $7500 to $9000 for golf course use fees to insure our players are ready to compete in the spring. By our doing this, your child has “team membership” at 3 courses during the school year. At present, they can play for free at Whitehawk & Lit’ Links 7 days a week AND at The Links for free Monday thru Friday. they can play for $5 on weekends at The Links. Golf is not a cheap sport, as you know, but that makes your golf fees a real bargain over the school year.

THE DISTRICT GIVES US A NICE BUDGET (& a great practice facility)…. In fact, at Bixby, we get more money for the program than I received at Jenks or Union… But since my goal is to keep kids playing this important lifeskills sport, we keep far more kids playing this sport at BPS than almost any school. That requires us to raise more money than the school should be expected to provide a sports team such as golf. We would have plenty of district provided funds for a “normal size” golf program…. But I prefer us to be “above normal” in size & numbers!

SUMMARY: Please have your Spartan Golfer go out and find a HOLE SPONSOR. Doing so, they will not have a spring fee to pay. Also, consider entering a family & friends scramble team. It is a great day of fun and benefits the team members. The scramble team doesn’t satisfy spring fees for your players as we have to pay the golf course for the tournament, but the hole sponsor money all goes to our team and that is why your Spartan does not have to pay their $175 spring fee in December….Essentially, it costs about $35 a month to be on the golf team…. That is for course fees, uniforms, tournaments and meals… A great bargain…..I have estimated, considering what we do each year, if we did not have a successful fund raising tournament it would cost a parent around $500 to $600 for the year for total involvement in playing on the team. AND THAT WOULD NOT NECESSARILY GUARANTEE A JV OR B TEAM PLAYER GETS TO PLAY IN TOURNAMENTS….. Let’s keep it the way everyone gets involved and have another great fund raiser!

Contact Chris Johnson if you can help… 918-629-8839.. You can also send me your Sponsorship or scramble team forms…..

Thanks, I appreciate you all!! – Coach Morrow

BOOSTER CLUB MEETING TO PLAN FOR FUND RAISER: Wednesday 9/13 at GOLF COMPLEX – 6:00 – 7:00
